Minutes from 2006 Meeting held in
Brownsville on April 29, 2006.

The Tennessee Chapter of the Military Order of Stars and Bars met at College Hill in Brownsville on April 29, 2006 with Lynn Jackson Shaw, Commander, presiding.  The pledge to the American Flag was rendered by compatriot Mr. Russell Bailey of Gen. Cadmus M. Wilcox Chapter of Covington.    Mr. Beau Cantrell of Oklahoma led in the Military Order of Stars and Bars Pledge.

A beautiful rendition of "Dixie" was rendered by the gospel quartet "Glory Bound."

The roll call confirmed that six chapters were represented and present with twenty-eight representatives present.  The Commander noted that the Bate Chapter from Nashville had withdrawn from the Tennessee Chapter and the Morgan Chapter had not paid dues for the coming year.

In old business, the Commander noted that the Forrest Monument provided for the Forrest Boyhood Home had been vandalized and replaced by insurance.  The marker was sent to Commander Shaw by error and was forwarded to Gene Andrews for disposition.  Two members reported that a marker was standing at the home, but its origin was undetermined.  Commander Shaw stated that a thousand dollars had been spent on the original marker with an additional gift of over six hundred dollars paid for the marker.  The commander noted that he would call Mr. Andrews and request information on the whereabouts of the marker.

Commander Shaw requested a report from the CEC conference held recently in Memphis by Mr. Cantrell from Oklahoma who serves on the council.   Mr. Cantrell noted that the conference had a large number present and that growth within the organization was promising with an increase of ten to fifteen members a month signing up to join the organization in the new headquarters in Alabama.  At the present rate of growth, Mr. Cantrell stated that membership would exceed three thousand members this year and is expected to grow to over three thousand five hundred at the present rate of growth.  He announced that a new CIC and national staff had been nominated  at the meeting for action in the convention to start in Mobile on July 20th.  Delegates were encouraged to get their reservations in as the allocation of rooms is filling fast.  Mr. Cantrell noted that the MOS&B Archives taken from Elm Hill in the recent move have been housed in the first class facilities of the Oklahoma Historical Society, where they are protected around the clock by security and fire protection in a temperature controlled environment.  He reported that the Daphne Headquarters of the MOS&B are up and running and working on the coming convention at the Marriott in Mobile.

In new business, Commander Shaw was re-nominated for Commander to serve the 2006-2007 year without opposition.  Other present officers remained the same.

The meeting was dismissed by the Commander to resume after lunch served by the Joe Wheeler Chapter of the UDC.

The afternoon session was highlighted by a concert from the gospel group "Glory Bound."   Following the music, Mr. Beau Cantrell gave a wonderful address on the life of Robert E. Lee.  Door prizes of Tripp Country Hams were won by John McDonald of Murfreesboro and Beau Cantrell of Oklahoma.

Respectfully submitted,

A. R. Dixon, Adjutant

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE TENNESSEE
SOCIETY OF THE MILITARY ORDER
OF STARS AND BARS

----------------------------------------

The society was born twenty-seven years ago when the Commander - in - Chief of the Military Order of Stars and Bars appointed Dr. B. H. Webster of Nashville as Commander of the Tennessee Society.   Dr. Webster proposed naming the new organization, the John Hunt Morgan Society, in honor of his ancestor who served under the revered General during the War Between the States.
Shortly after his appointment, Dr. B. H. Webster became ill and he was no longer able to carry on with the duties of the office, therefore, it became necessary to find others who could lead the Society.  On September 14, 1980 in the Senate Chamber of the Tennessee State Capitol in Nashville, the first election of officers was held.  At this gathering, three of the four active chapters in the State were represented.   Ronald T. Clemmons of the Gen. Joseph B. Palmer Chapter of Murfreesboro was elected Commander, Lynn Jackson Shaw of the Shaw-Battle Chapter of Brownsville was elected Lt. Commander and Albert Baxendale of the Gen. John Hunt Morgan Chapter of Nashville was elected Adjutant.   Among the items that were approved during this first meeting of the Society was a two dollar per member per annum dues structure, an awards program and the appointment of a constitutional committee.  By the Spring of 1981, that committee had finished our Society's constitution which was thereafter approved by the membership.   Publican of our first newsletter, "The Vidette" began under Commander Clemmon's administration.
Since that time, the John Hunt Morgan Society has been represented at every National Reunion of the Military Order of Stars and Bars.  A number of our members have served as officers in the national organization including Ronald Turner Clemmons and John L. Echols, Sr. who have both served as Commander - in - Chief of the MOS&B.  Prior to the organization of our Society, two other Tennesseans have also served in the capacity of Commander - in - Chief of the MOS&B namely J. Kile Senter (1957-59) and Alvis I. Downs (1959-1961).
